11. Advertising Click Monitoring & Fraud Prevention
When you visit our website, particularly after clicking one of our paid Google advertisements, we automatically collect technical information about your visit for the purposes described below.
Why we collect it
- Detecting automated or potentially invalid advertising traffic
- Protecting our advertising expenditure
- Maintaining the security of our website
- Supporting Google invalid-traffic investigations, including providing evidence when we ask Google to review suspicious clicks
What we collect
- Advertising identifiers: Google click identifiers (GCLID, GBRAID and WBRAID) and related campaign details such as the campaign, ad group, keyword, match type, ad and network.
- IP address: your IP address, which we store only in encrypted form (encrypted raw IP), together with a keyed IP hash. The keyed IP hash is a one-way code created with a secret key that lets us recognise repeat activity without displaying your IP address.
- Device and browser: browser, operating system, device category, screen and viewport resolution, language, time zone, touch capability and approximate hardware information (such as processor-core count and approximate device memory). From some of these details we create a keyed device signature, which is used only to recognise repeat activity and is not proof of identity.
- Network and approximate location: network provider and autonomous system number (ASN), connection information (such as connection protocol, timing and secure-connection characteristics) and approximate IP-based city, postcode and region.
- Website behaviour: visit time, repeat visits, page engagement (such as how long a page was visible), scrolling, phone-link clicks and successful form submissions.
We do not use canvas, audio or font fingerprinting, and we do not read the contents of any form for this purpose.
Location permission and GPS
Our monitoring may record whether browser location permission is granted, denied or unavailable, but it does not currently request permission or collect GPS coordinates. If GPS collection is introduced in the future, the browser will request your explicit permission before any GPS location is collected. Refusing permission is never treated as suspicious.
Risk scores
We may calculate a risk score to help us review advertising traffic. Risk scores are currently used for monitoring and review only. A risk score does not independently identify any visitor as fraudulent, and it is not used on its own to block anyone from our website.
Security
- Raw IP addresses are encrypted (AES-256-GCM), and the encryption key is held separately in our cloud infrastructure provider's secure secret store.
- Access to our monitoring dashboard is restricted to authorised personnel and protected by a password, short sessions and failed-login limits. Viewing decrypted IP addresses requires re-entering the password and is recorded in an audit log.
- We do not sell this information.
How long we keep it
- Detailed records (including advertising identifiers, encrypted IP addresses, keyed IP hashes, device, browser, network, approximate location and website behaviour) are retained for 120 days and then automatically deleted.
- De-identified aggregate statistics (for example, daily totals of advertising clicks and enquiries by campaign, device type, browser and country) may be retained longer. They do not contain IP addresses, IP hashes, device signatures, session identifiers or click identifiers.
Disclosure
We may share relevant records, including IP addresses, with Google when we ask it to investigate invalid traffic, and with Cloudflare, which provides cloud infrastructure and security services for this monitoring system (see section 4). We may also disclose information where required or authorised by law. Our service providers may store information outside Australia.
Your choices
You can browse our website without clicking our advertisements. Blocking scripts or cookies may prevent some of this information from being collected. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can contact the OAIC as described in section 9.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The current version will always be available on our website.
