Level 2 electricians in Sydney charge $150–$200 per hour — roughly double a standard electrician — because they're accredited to work on the network side of your connection: service mains, point of attachment, metering and consumer mains. Expect call-outs involving network coordination to start around $300–$500. Common jobs: a new service connection runs $800–$2,500, a private pole replacement $2,500–$6,000, and a single-to-three-phase conversion $6,500–$9,500 fully installed. Network authority. Only an Accredited Service Provider can legally touch the service main, point of attachment, meter and consumer mains. A standard electrician's job stops at the meter.
Distributor coordination. Ausgrid or Endeavour disconnections and reconnections have to be scheduled, certified and notified — that admin and liability is built into the price.
Access and method. Overhead work needs EWP or pole access; underground work needs trenching and conduit. Site conditions move the price more than the cable does.
Asbestos-era meter boards. Pre-1990 boards frequently have asbestos backing, adding licensed removal before metering work can start.
Emergency timing. Storm-damage make-safes at 2am cost more than a scheduled weekday job — but leaving live mains down costs a lot more than either.
It's the most common story we hear: a quoted switchboard upgrade or new connection halts on the day because the electrician isn't accredited to disconnect supply or touch the mains. You then pay a Level 2 ASP anyway — plus the wasted call-out. If the job involves anything between the street and your meter, check accreditation first. It depends entirely on what's listed — a deteriorated point of attachment might be a few hundred dollars, while defective consumer mains plus an asbestos board can run several thousand. If the supply needs to be disconnected at the network, the mains are being replaced, or the meter is being moved — yes. Straightforward board internals can be done by a standard electrician, but most older Sydney boards involve at least one Level 2 item.
