What's in your street. If the network is underground in your street, your connection will be underground. If it's poles, you can choose either — underground just means trenching from the pole pit.
Run length and surfaces. A short trench through lawn is cheap. Forty metres under a concrete driveway isn't. Overhead cost barely changes with distance.
The private pole question. If your overhead setup needs a new or replacement private pole, that $2,500–$6,000 often closes the gap to underground — compare both quotes before defaulting to like-for-like.
Trees and storm history. Heavily treed blocks in storm corridors — the Hills, Hawkesbury, Northern Beaches — are where undergrounding pays for itself in avoided emergency call-outs.
